nearly a week

:: i’m sitting at our kitchen table listening to the first rain we’ve had all week hit the roof of our house.  we can hear the rain here. we couldn’t hear it very well in the apartment, what with the roar of the highway a block away. but here it’s quiet and the rain is tapping.

:: we moved last sunday. i still haven’t found the table salt (we have kosher and fancy sea salt to get us through) or my hot chocolate.

:: josephine and i ate lunch the other day while watching birds in the back yard, identifying the ones we saw using a bird book a friend gave us.

:: our car got broken into on tuesday while josephine and i ran into the library for five minutes. they took my favorite handmade bag, our cell phone and our ipod, all of which i had foolishly left sitting out. it’s such a little thing, i told myself. of all that could go wrong, this is nothing. but there was a lot of glass in the front seat and now our shopping list is a little longer.

:: we had our dear friends and now neighbors over for dinner tonight. and friends from out of town were in seattle for the day and stopped by. sharing our new space with friends makes it feel a little more real.

:: josephine’s new room looks very similar to her old room. i think it will be fun to rearrange once we’re settled.

:: i have had many long thoughts about curtain logistics for all the windows.

:: josephine’s sassafras attitude has flared up and i’m going to blame it on transition and hope things get easier soon. she drives us nuts and we love her to pieces, equally, at the same time.

:: we have a garage now and, when it’s someday not full of boxes and a couch that’s really really heavy and is supposed to be moved inside, we’ll be able to park our car in it.

:: the shower backed up and we showered at our friends-now-neighbors’ house. other friends, our annual thanksgiving morning companions, talked us through a solution and now our shower drains like a champ.

:: my aunt and uncle sent us a box of kindling from their farm in minnesota. i put it in the fireplace and hope to put it to good use very soon.

:: i feel like i’m holding back from falling in love with this house just a little bit because it’s a bit nerve-wracking to own a home. it’s like falling for the reformed bad boy. at any moment he could turn bad again: the shower could back up or you could discover a crack in the tiles or the garage could flood or or or. despite it all, i’m pretty smitten with this place.

:: it’s raining harder now and i put flannel sheets on our bed today. it’s supposed to get cold this week. i feel so grateful that we’re warm in our home.

lavender’s wedding

written by josephine, transcribed by teacher marion

This is a picture of Lavender in a pretty dress at her wedding. So, first, the guests came in and we hung a welcome sign on the door and then we went to a room and everybody started to dance and then I was the director. I said, “Wait a minute, guys. I gotta turn the music on!” And everybody freezed and kept freezing until I turned the music on and started dancing. Lavender and I were dancing (but we weren’t getting married — me and Jenny got married and I’m so excited to meet the baby kittens) and I said, “What pretty dancing, Lavender.” And then Lavender said, “I guess it’s time for circle. I’m so hungry. I guess it’s time for dinner.” And then the guests left.

[that drawing of lavender didn’t photograph very well, so i’ll include a recent favorite cat-in-dress drawing.]

things josephine has recently carried around with her for the day

:: a printed out picture of the dragon from one of her favorite books, my father’s dragon.

:: a photo of a cat, from a pad of notepaper, tucked inside a small metal tin.

:: a fish-shaped blue bead.

:: a tiny bird-shaped eraser.

:: a unicorn i drew and josephine cut out of a piece of paper with sequins taped on it and a person made out of a small foam rocket with a taped-on pom-pom head.

:: 14 bitty pictures of a cat face, wrapped in a green cloth and tucked inside a mini-ziplock, tucked inside a little pink coin purse.

:: a strawberry-shaped button, wrapped in a packet of blue painter tape.

:: a stuffed cat lying on a small metal tray that came with her tea set.

we own a home. i’m not sure when this fact will sink in. we spent the day (well, josephine and i spent the morning/early afternoon, ned spend the whole entire long day) at the new house, getting it ready for us to move in on sunday. and now i’m going to bed, and, if the last few nights are any indication, will probably wake up at 3am to think deep thoughts about curtain rods or rakes or the room arrangements. more soon!

rowan was here

a few weeks ago, my sister (aka the baby transporter) brought her son rowan to seattle. it was his inaugural visit and his first plane ride and he’s a baby made for travel. he was so happy and content. not at all similar to a certain four-year-old i know…

honestly, we didn’t do much of anything while they were here, but it was so good to just BE with them. they got to visit our new house and check out the nearby pond. we went to the zoo. the kids woke us up at 6am after daylight savings messed up their sleep, so we put them in bed together and it was all so cute until rowan went after josephine’s hair.

rowan is strong evidence that babyhood should begin at nine months of age.

even though josephine was planning on teaching rowan to walk and read while he was here and neither of those goals were accomplished, we did get to eat donuts together. and my sister and i got to be moms together. and i got squeeze fat baby thigh. what’s better than that?

[housing update: we signed a million pieces of paper today and we get our keys tomorrow! it’s crazy! we’re a little bowled over!]

it does sound bad

josephine: that ending was pretty crobadashal.

me: crob-a-dash-al? what does that mean?

josephine: horrid.

gigi and papa come to visit, a post by joey

gigi and papa’s visit. we went to visit our new house and we went for a walk. they gave me a cat in a case. the cat’s name is abby evita effigo. she’s white. she makes me happy.

this is a picture of me and gigi at our house. we were having dinner with our family. i forgot who came.IMG_9430 (800x533)

i’m swinging on the swing. it’s great.IMG_9463 (800x533)

dada is swinging really high. i felt really scared. i said “get off right away, dada.”IMG_9469 (800x533)

i’m watching the popcorn. i’m covering my ears because it’s too loud. i like popcorn.IMG_9470 (533x800)

all there is is a boat in water. not very exciting, huh?IMG_9476 (800x533)

this is because i wanted more cats in the world. i wrote it at the museum.IMG_9480 (800x533)

we can see everyone’s faces and we’re standing behind a big red boat. it’s a picture of gigi and papa and me and mama and dada. i did not like taking this picture because it was so horrible. because we just had to stand and smile. nothing exciting happened.

pumpkin-related recaps

i’m trying not to smear chocolate on the keyboard while i dive into josephine’s stash of candy. (isn’t that the point of halloween? kids gather candy so parents can steal from their children’s trick-or-treating haul?) josephine was much more interested in dressing up than in the candy-getting part of the holiday this year. and who can blame her? the kid wants to be a cat and for two days (dance class on wednesday and halloween proper) she got to be a cat, paws and all.

IMG_9950 (533x800)

she was very concerned about her face-painted whiskers and nose and kept asking “does this look ok?”. before we went out trick or treating, she wanted to put on the face paint by herself. i’m not sure this child even knows makeup exists, but i think i’m in trouble.

IMG_0009 (533x800)

IMG_9997 (800x533)

we went trick-or-treating with meera in her new neighborhood (she just moved — they’re going to be moving buddies). josephine was pretty worried about it all at first. the night went like this:

“i’m trembling all over!”

“mama, get the candy for me.”

“i feel scared of that [ghost, skeleton, pumpkin] even though i know it isn’t real.”

“this is more fun than i thought!”

i think the third picture down does a nice job of showing her trepidation.

staying on the pumpkin-y theme for a moment, here are some photos from our annual trip to the pumpkin patch with jami, ann and dylan. meera came along, too. (a recap of previous years’ photos is here.)
