Tilly’s little fuzz head is currently sparkly with glitter. We spent the morning with friends and remnants of the girls’ glitter snowflake project drifted to all nearby surfaces, including the baby’s head. There was supposed to be cookie decorating, too, but the big girls were having such a good time playing and the moms were so enjoying their gabbing that we didn’t get around to the cookies.

We are in our own home for Christmas for the first time and, while it is really nice to not be getting on a plane, part of celebrating the holidays has, for years, involved traveling long distances to be with family. We are trying to find ways to make Christmas special here, just us. But without a boarding pass and jam-packed suitcases and anxious checks of Midwest weather reports, it’s hard to believe it’s the night before the night before Christmas.

The glitter-headed baby helps. As does Josephine’s extreme excitement for the big day. The cookies I made the other day are making things sweeter, too. And the lights shining through the long, dark nights.

a belated thanksgiving post…

i’m thankful for my beautiful, thriving girls. and for my steadfast, hard-working, patient husband who takes care of us all and keeps me laughing. i’m thankful for our home and for warmth and good food. i’m thankful for good health. i’m thankful for our amazing community of friends and family who lift us up and grounds us at the same time.

i’m thankful we had a table to spread with good food on thanksgiving and share with ned’s parents and with cousin eliza. i’m thankful for a turkey the same size as the baby. i’m thankful for our fireplace and for pie. and for eliza’s guitar.

auntie and the boys

we had such a splendid visit from my sister and her family — a chilly playground with mountain views, a caspar concert at a donut shop, cousin baths, baby-snuggling, sail boat rides, and gym explorations. if we didn’t have friends who live there, i would be writing a very strongly-worded letter to the president to urge him to consider evicting montana from the union so that washington was closer to minnesota (because that’s how that would work). in the meantime, we’ll enjoy the brief visits.

fall day

two posts in a row and no pictures of the baby?! UNACCEPTABLE! this will be remedied immediately.

yesterday, we spent a beautiful fall morning at the arboretum with jami, ann and dylan (and the rest of seattle). the sun was like medicine after days of monsoon-like rains.

Pack rat

Josephine’s art table had a half-foot of papers and drawings and craft projects and junk on it and it was time to clean. I told her to sort everything on the table into three piles: keep, recycle and maybe. When she finished, she had one teetering “keep” pile and no other stacks. As she placed the last few bits and scraps on the pile, I heard her say, “Oh! A broken rubber band. Of course I love it.”

Of course.

Totally unrelated, our recycle bin is quite full tonight…

To each their own

The four of us went for a family walk the other day on the bike trail near our house. We were sitting on a bench, eating a snack, and there were a few moments of silence. Josephine asked what we were thinking about.

She told us she was thinking about whether her stuffies could talk. I was wondering when I’d have a chance to nap that day. Ned was thinking about  when he could ride his bike to work again.

Tilly was probably thinking about nursing.

track or treat

for some reason, despite the fact that we’ve corrected her many times, josephine calls it “track or treat.” we’ve stopped correcting her and just enjoy it. so. track or treating. josephine was a cat. she had decided weeks before halloween that she wanted to be a bat and i came up with a plan to make a simple but cool bat costume. however, the morning we were to go shopping for materials, she had no interest in leaving the house. she quickly decided she would reprise last year’s black cat costume so that we wouldn’t have to go anywhere. this was great for me, as i really didn’t have much energy for creativity. however, as a mildly crafty person, it was a little painful to send my child out track or treating as a barely-recognizable black cat. but she was so happy with her costume and excited to do her own face paint (and decided to paint her ears on her forehead rather than wearing felt ears on a head band). and so happiness ruled and track or treating (and dinner afterward) with meera the witch was a great success. (tilly, in another instance of very un-creative costumery, wore a pumpkin onesie and was — you guessed it — a pumpkin. a very cute pumpkin.)
