to the moon!

josephine’s class (along with some super-wonderful parents who volunteered to chaperone, ahem) went on a field trip today to the science center.  the main destination was the planetarium for a showing of “to the moon,” which was appropriate as they’ve been studying the solar system at school. sadly, the planetarium show was the low-point of the trip. it was pretty pathetic. and was dwarfed in fun-quotient by riding the bus, playing on a stage in the shadow of the space needle, lots of sunshine (!) and time at the science center.

we got home and she went to work creating a spaceship under the table. her astronaut helmet consisted of the seat from her doll stroller strapped around her head with a headband and the same surgical hairnet that was protection against plumbing mishaps a few posts back.

overheard under the table:

“dada! since you can’t have an eye mask, you can have a handcuff.”

“a lever for you to pull, a lever for me to pull. 3, 2, 1 blastoff!”

thanks, planets and the moon, for providing such rich inspiration!

watch week

josephine just finished up a semester of a creative ballet class taught at a local studio.  to celebrate the last week of class, the studio has “watch week,” where parents and any other adult who might possibly care enough about a child to watch him/her frolic around a dance floor for an hour, can come watch the last session. josephine was thrilled that both ned and i could come and we were thrilled to watch her frolic.

although she loved dance class, she has decided she wants to switch to gymnastics instead. but she only wants to have class with a certain coach, a coach who doesn’t teach any classes on the day we’re able to take a class. so we’re working through that and having discussions about making commitments and flexibility and trying new things etc etc etc.

anyway, here’s our learning-to-be-flexible-in-all-ways dancer:
