word of the day

[at a grocery store, heading into the women’s room]

josephine: so that’s the men’s room and this is the women’s room?

me: that’s right.

josephine: what happens if you go into the wrong bathroom? is there an unrewardable thing someone has to do if they go in the wrong one?

celebrating robin and danny

our friends got married a couple months ago in a tiny ceremony with family and then, lucky for us, they had a big party for all the rest of us. we drove out to ellensburg and sat in the shade in 100-degree heat and had a wonderful time. sara, jason, colin and dear baby julia were there, too. josephine went in the pool in her dress (and then changed into her swimsuit), we ate a lot of delicious food, visited with lovely people (and horses) and ended up lingering for five hours. it was delightful.

first pet

we fostered our friends’ gecko for a year while they traveled the world and lola was a very (very) low-maintenance pet. we fed her once a week, cleaned her tank every six months and that’s about it. she was a lovely addition to the household. but her owners are back in town now and lola (along with her container full of live worms that we kept in the fridge) is gone.

months before lola’s departure, josephine began scheming about a new pet. one that was hers, not one on loan. and so, last week, we welcomed finshine into our home. josephine was very careful at the fish store to pick a fish “that really really loves me.” how do you tell if a fish really really loves you? well, when you look into their tank, they look back at you. give you a good, long loving look with their little fishy eyes. josephine and finshine shared a special moment and now we have a fish.

separate but awesome

last week, i went to portland. by myself. i’ve taken one other solo trip since josephine’s been around and, while i love my child and my husband, it was quite nice to be elsewhere. you know what was on my packing list? nothing that wasn’t mine! i took the train down — my first time doing that — and enjoyed the heck out of it all. i stayed with friends and we did not much of anything. just what i needed.

and then? when i came back? nobody was home! ned and josephine had gone on their own adventure: camping at mount rainier. they had a night on their own and then a night of shared camping with josephine’s BFF meera and her parents. and i had a night home alone. i watched a movie while eating a giant kale salad that i balanced on my belly (not all that virtuous — i was trying to balance out my portland diet). and i’m pretty sure i smiled a lot for no reason. and the next day, after a long, quiet day home alone, i was extremely pleased to be handed a sound-asleep josephine who smelled like camp fire and proceeded to sleep on my lap for an hour.

i think we all felt the beauty of both the time away and the comfort of being back together again.

(i’ll let you guess which pictures are from where.)
