(I’ve even seen her trying to get on her hands and knees)

Tilly is on the move. She rolls and wiggles her way across the floor and is no longer in the same place I left her. I know this is the start of actual mobility; of scooting and crawling and pulling up and walking. And it’s the start of all the fun stuff that goes along with it; baby-proofing, worrying about our very hard fireplace mantle that spans the length of the room, her getting into Josephine’s toys, etc. I have to say: I DO NOT LIKE IT. Just a couple weeks ago, I could put her down on her little play mat, go stir dinner cooking on the stove, come back and say, “Oh! You rolled over!” Yesterday, I set her down on the floor (having packed up the play mat and it’s arced bars that kept getting in her way), went to the bathroom, came back and said, “Oh! You rolled and twisted across the floor and wedged your legs under the couch.” Awesome.

camera shy

the light was so pretty at breakfast the other morning. our house doesn’t get a lot of sun streaming through the windows (one of my main complaints) but the kitchen is bright in the morning and it makes me very happy. tilly has been sleeping in and giving josephine and me time to have breakfast together. josephine was not as excited about my idea of taking some pictures to commemorate the winter sunshine. she alternated between hiding and making faces. apparently making faces at 5.5 years of age involves a lot of sticking one’s tongue out. my lovely girl.

solid

for fifteen months, i have sustained this child with my body alone. now i hand her (incrementally, slowly) over to the rest of the world to feed and nourish. as with her sister, we started with some squash from the farmers market. she was so excited to finally be eating — she’s been carefully watching our forks’ paths to our mouths for weeks — that she grinned and kicked her little feet and grinned and kicked some more. and ate like an old pro.

celebrating 90

A few weeks ago, we traveled southward to Oregon to celebrate my granddad’s 90th birthday. We rented a house with my great aunt and uncle, my aunt and uncle, and two of my cousins and their families. Growing up in Minnesota, I spent a lot more time with my mom’s side of the family, so one of the perks of moving to Seattle has been getting closer to the wonderful people on my dad’s side, most of whom live in Washington and Oregon.

The drive down, which when undertaken by people with competent bladders and a modicum of patience takes six hours, took about ten when undertaken by four people, two of whom possess the aforementioned qualities and two of whom DO NOT. I haven’t wanted to add it up because it’s just too depressing, but it’s possible that we spent more time in the car than we did awake at our destination. Luckily, it all was worth it. Josephine had a fantastic time creating “deer contraptions” in the bushes in the front yard with her cousins, the grown-ups got to laugh and catch up and play dice games, and Tilly got to meet some very important people. And we all got to celebrate my granddad and his milestone birthday. When it was time to get (back) into the car (again), I was wishing we had another day or two to explore and spend more time together.
