sounding out a love note

josephine is in love with her school friend ellis. ellis is there two of three days of the week that josephine attends pre-k — aptly named “ellis days” — and josephine literally bounds out of bed with joy on those days. ellis also loves cats and wears her cat clothes on the days josephine will be there. i love that they are in this little mutual adoration society. i hope it’s the first of many such school friendships.

the other day, josephine proudly presented me with a note to ellis that she had written all by herself. this was the first time she had done all the sounding out and spelling on her own; before this she had been very reluctant to just dive in. well. this note is a masterpiece. it’s VERY dramatic and very anne-of-green-gablesesque to me. if josephine knew the term “bosom friend,” i am positive she would consider ellis hers.

can’t quite make it out? it says:

“Dear Ellis and your mom. A poem by Joey. You are the only bright thing in my life. We love you. We’re really true. A note by Joey. Ellis, the day that I arrived I only wanted Julianna to be my friend. But then I only wanted you. A very loving word. Do you know who I love best in the world. You.”

she showed this to me and was SO very proud of her work. i read it through (with some help) and she skipped off. she came back in the kitchen a few minutes later and quietly said, “mama? i think i’m the only five-year-old who can spell!”

10 days, 7 cousins, 5 states (part 2)

we hit kansas and missouri then drove through iowa to get to minnesota (where we took a day trip to wisconsin). although the day spent in the car wasn’t the most pleasant thanks to tilly’s dissatisfaction with being stuck in the car seat, we made a 7 hour drive in 9 hours, which i thought was a pretty impressive time.

grandma took josephine on a couple fun outings — a play and a cat! tea! party! (i must get photos of that from my mom) — and we all did a lot of hanging out and playing. went swimming, went for a walk on a country road, visited my aunt and uncle and took a few photos (with a tired big sister) in grandma’s garlic patch. my sister’s family just moved into a brand new home of which i have zero photos but is just gorgeous. it was so amazing to see it in person after watching it come together from afar. it made me all fired up to get some of our own house projects done. (and then we got home and i remembered how i can barely write a blog post, let alone rearrange all the things hanging on the walls or sew new pillow cases for the couch. someday…)

they’re pretty darn great, my family.

10 days, 5 states, 7 cousins (part 1)

well. i’m a bit behind on blogging, eh? we went on this trip, see, and before that i was packing and there was some germy stuff happening in josephine’s nasal region. and then there’s this baby here who seems to like a lot of attention. and i’m not sleeping all that restfully. so the blog slipped by the wayside. i attempted to write a few posts while we were traveling, but something’s wrong with my wordpress app and i was not successful. anyhow. onward and upward. there will be more posts soon. i have some fairly cute photos of my fairly cute family that i just can’t not share. but now, the trip.

we journeyed by plane and car and then by plane again to kansas city and red wing (and back to seattle) to visit ned’s brother’s family and my family. it was a long time to be away but also so good to just settle into being gone and spending quality time with people we love and don’t see nearly often enough.

i can’t cull the photos from the trip to any sort of reasonable amount, so i’m going to cover the trip in two parts. today: kansas city. josephine and tilly have six cousins in KC, one of whom we hadn’t even met. watching all the cousins interact was a total delight. josephine and lizzie were joined at the hip (i think i need to find myself a local lizzie here in seattle). and natalie, each and every time she saw tilly, said “oh, i just YUV that yittle baby tiwee!” after spending the days in the energetic company of eight kids, we parents had a few brief moments together after the kids were in bed before we stumbled off to our own beds. it was all so good.

we spent a day at annie’s irish dance competition. it was pretty fascinating and a very good reminder to think about what a child’s involvement in an activity/sport means for the parent. we took a break from the fiddle music with a picnic lunch in the hot kansas sun. (annie’s wearing a wig, by the way.)

this is my child swimming underwater

the last time my mom came to visit, she had the distinct honor of coming along to one of josephine’s swim lessons. she got to hear josephine worry and cry intermittently throughout the day before the lesson and got to watch her shiver and weep in the pool while the other kids wiggled and giggled their way through the lesson. josephine was terrified of dunking her head under water and there was no joy to be found in lessons.

i’m very happy to say that we’ve had a very major breakthrough. i’m not sure what it was, exactly. we had her do three private swim lessons at the pool she (very happily) swims at with ned each week. there wasn’t any dunking involved, but i think it helped boost her confidence just enough so that she could gather up the courage to put her head under. we couldn’t be prouder.
