ida got married

a few nights back, our home was host to a wedding of grand proportions. ida, the giraffe, married paul, also a giraffe (but an invisible one, so he was a little tough to photograph). josephine was the wedding planner and head chef and she did a fantastic job. she officiated beautifully and gave each guest such loving individual attention, including name tags. our very best wishes to the newlyweds.

this kid…

IMG_2599

this kid is allllmost walking. she’s pulling up on anything and everything and practicing standing and squatting. any day now. our lives will change forever. when she’s not standing and squatting and pulling up, she’s crawling faster than seems possible.

IMG_2631

this kid love being outside. she calls it “ah oooo!” and points out the window and chants, “ah ooo! ah ooo! ah ooo!” she’s so happy when she’s discovering the ways in which dirt sifts through her fingers or deciding just how much grass she should tug out of the ground.

IMG_2637

this kid is talking so much. like, maybe more than her sister was at this age? is that possible? newest language acquisitions include “nigh night” (night night), “neow” (meow), “tooh” (toast), and “no.”

IMG_2657

this kid is working on her photo smile. you say “cheese!” and she does her best, most crinkle-nosed smile. she’s a little piece of magic.

way back in september, there was a trip

[i am feeling so neglectful of this space. i’m probably the only one who cares — or one of the only ones who cares (hello, grandmothers!) — but i want to do a better job of keeping up on documenting our lives. tilly’s baby book is literally a blank book and my brain is a sieve, so this is it. more soon, i hope.]

Way back in September, the girls and I took a short trip to Minnesota. We left the day after Josephine’s birthday and came back a few days before what was supposed to be Josephine’s first day of school (that was then delayed due to the teacher strike). I questioned the wisdom of the trip the moment I booked the tickets. Was it too much money to spend to go for only a few days? Too close to the start of school? Too much to do in the middle of birthday month? Too crazy to fly solo with two kids? Would it be worth it? All of my worry was totally unnecessary. It was a great trip. Short but wonderful. The girls were fantastic travelers and it was a perfect distraction from the antsiness surrounding kindergarten’s start. And dreams came true: Josephine got to meet Auntie’s new cat. And she got to RIDE A HORSE. Enough said. Billions of photos follow. (Seriously. A lot. But I took over 600 and whittled it down to these 39 for you (Grandmothers).)

hello, one

our dear little tilly turned one last month. she is just the best baby. i tell her that multiple times a day. she’s happy and engaged and goes along with all the zaniness we toss her way. i feel like we can watch her brain grow and expand as she takes in new aspects of her world every day. and she’s talking! i thought perhaps i would get to enjoy experience having a quiet child after josephine. but tilly appears to be as excited to communicate as her sister was.

ned had the day off work on her birthday and the three of us went out to lunch. ned and i enjoyed fantastic pizza and were kind enough to share the crusts with the birthday girl. tilly worked on her “cheese” face. that evening, after a park date with meera, she enjoyed her first taste of ice cream.

her birthday party was a pretty laid-back affair. (as in, i forgot that i should probably be planning some sort of activity for the hoards of kids in attendance until about two days before the party. and even then didn’t do much.) we had it at the same park we had josephine’s first birthday party and, as we have on all of our park birthday parties, we lucked out with the weather. it was cool but sunny. and there was lots of chocolate cake.
