mazama!

it sounds like a magician’s magic word: MAZAMA! it’s nearly as magical: a tiny town tucked in a little valley in the north cascade mountains of washington. and, even more magical, our friends — meera and her family — have a house there and they invited us to join them for labor day weekend. it was josephine’s 7th birthday while we were there and being on vacation with her BFF made it an extra-special celebration. ned and i celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary here, too, and got to go out to dinner. just us! no kids!

i don’t think i need to add much narrative to these photos. it was a fun-filled, beauty-saturated weekend.

back to MN

i’m so behind on documenting our life on this here blog, i’ve almost forgotten about the trips i haven’t posted about. looking through the photos brought this late-august trip to minnesota back to life, though. it was a wonderful one filled with all the things we love about minnesota: family, a cute baby, a barn full of cats, reading, trying to get tilly to sit still for a picture, good food, early birthday celebrations, and love love love.

saying goodbye

My grandad Harold died earlier this week. The week before, he was on his way home from the hospital after bringing my Grandma there for trouble that she was having swallowing. He had a massive stroke while driving home but, in his usual in-control way, managed to pull his car into a parking lot and not run into anyone. It was quickly clear that he was not going to recover. He was 91. A dozen family members (and one adorable baby) gathered in their town in Oregon to say goodbye. Although the circumstances were quite grim — the family patriarch was hours or days from dying and the matriarch was recovering from her own medical issues — there was so much laughter and smiling and telling of good stories. Nobody was oblivious to the fact that we were hanging out in the hospital or that we were about to lose Grandad, but everyone was grateful to be there and to be together. I think we gave him a really good send-off.

A seven year old’s idea of cybercrime

Josephine, at breakfast: “What if there was a bad guy online? I’m pretty sure he would pretend to be in love with someone, then send them a picture of a poopy diaper. And under it would say, ‘Yay! I want to ger married!'”

annual gathering

once again, we gathered with my old grad school friends (not that we’re old! we’re young!) and their families for a weekend of camping fun, this time at mount rainier. we missed robin and her family but know we’ll lure them back next year.

our family had a night of camping on our own before colin and julia’s family arrived. sydney and quinn and parents arrived the next day. so we camped three nights total. three nights camping with zany, energetic, exploring tilly. the good news is that she and josephine love camping and were happy almost the entire time. the other good news is that they both slept great. the bad news? there really isn’t any bad news, other than the fact that we failed to get a group shot or a photo of all the kids. we did a few small hikes and did the beginning of some longer hikes, just happy to be out in fresh air and sunshine and shadow. the weather was lovely until the last few hours of our weekend, the mountain is amazingly gorgeous, and we were reminded of how lucky we all are to have such wonderful friends.

the people in the site next to ours for the first two nights were stellar acoustic guitar players. they pulled out their instruments in the evenings and played gentle, quiet music that floated over to our site while i sat outside the tent after putting tilly down to bed. it was the perfect soundtrack.

atlanta

(gulp. i have a bit of catching up to do. two photo posts in all of july? i’ll dig myself out of this blog backlog one of these days…)

Atlanta! Last week we went to visit Ned’s parents — Gigi and Papa to the kids — in their lovely Atlanta home. In addition to our gracious hosts, we were all particularly fond of the air conditioning and the neighborhood pool. Everyone minus Tilly and I went to a puppet show (and saw Big Bird) and the whole lot of us went to the High Museum and enjoyed some art. We ate and napped and read books and played and caught up and laughed (mainly at Tilly’s antics). It was a great visit. And the 80 degree weather went we got home felt downright chilly.

More soon. We’re heading out to Mount Rainier tomorrow to camp! With Tilly! Who never stops moving!

slinky tricks

josephine has been playing with a slinky lately and creating some tricks. better than the tricks, though, are the names she gives them. she performs “make a man do a cartwheel,” “how much leprechauns love gold,” and “milking the cow.” she’s quite the talented kid.
